Recorded at Upaya Zen Center, December 4th, 2005

This dharma talk begins with a short exposition by Kazuaki Tanahashi. Then Roshi Joan Halifax explores the Buddha’s relationship with Mara. She asks retreat participants what is their mara, their devil. She gives the account of Buddha’s encounter with Mara under the Bo tree. She makes the point that Mara is a state of mind that is characterized by limitation, our urge to make our lives predictable and safe. She completes this talk with the truth that awakening and practice cannot be separated.

We gratefully thank our friend of Upaya, Ottmar Liebert for his contribution of his music and bells used in our Podcast.
